Photos: Life inside of China’s massive and remote bitcoin mines
This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 10%. (I'm a bot)
Taking advantage of the cheap and plentiful hydroelectric power that an army of computers require, bitcoin mining is spreading in remote parts of China's Sichuan province. In dark and isolated warehouses, bitcoin mining machines hum along solving equations to produce the highly valued cryptocurrency. In 2016, Chinese photographer Liu Xingzhe spent time in China's bitcoin mines and with the miners themselves, who monitor the vast hallways of machines producing cryptocurrency for various clients. According to Liu, miners typically live in company dormitories for days at a time-not unlike the mining towns of yore-only occasionally traveling dozens of miles to the nearest town. Although increased government oversight has caused Chinese bitcoin trading to falter, the country remains an important player in bitcoin mining, thanks to cheap labor and computing power. Chinese clients who pay for bitcoins to be mined on their behalf can monitor progress remotely, using apps on their mobile phones.
We received several emails notify us that we were getting close (85%), reached (100%), and exceeded (125%) our monthly data usage cap over the span of 48 hours. This monthly cap turns out to be 1024 Gbs per month. (currently showing 157% usage as of now). After logging on to Cox, there was a graph showing the daily usage. Its pretty extreme, showing 10-20 gigs per day up until Thursday 20th. Then 171, 458, 460, 168. We spoke to several IT PrOfEsSiOnaLS over the phone who recommended such lifesaving advice as to "Change your Wifi passwords" or "Do you watch a lot of Netflix?". After the 4th person who couldn't help us, we decided we are going to go in person to the local branch in the coming days. But I thought maybe I should ask some people who might know the difference between a gigabyte and a pizza bite what they thought of it. I have a fair bit of technical knowledge myself. Software troubleshooting, pc assembly, OS installation, bios configuring, port forwarding, Lan setup, game modding, etc. I've been watching the resource monitors on both our household pc's to make sure we aren't being used for remote bitcoin mining or something, or if a program is using mine for file share seeding. Regardless, 460 gigs in a day is a bit... much. What do you all think of this? Any idea why this is? On a scale of 1 to "of course its Cox", how much is Cox at fault for this? What should we do about it? (I appear to not be able to add the image of the usage graph.) EDIT: Just for more information, I live in a retirement community taking care of my father in a full home surrounded on all sides with yards and fences. I doubt the 91 year old lady across the street is stealing our wifi to download 50 HD movies a day.
